Jacob Aue Sobol

With and Without You

A member of Magnum Photos since 2012, Aue Sobol records bracingly intimate encounters with people: from his then-girlfriend Sabine in East Greenland to passersby in the alleyways of Shibuya. "With and Without You" mixes this personal documentary work with virtuosic street photography and is connected with his book of the same name (published by Super Labo in 2016). These are pictures not to be thought about but felt.

Jacob Aue Sobol – Born in Denmark in 1976 and grew up in Brøndby Strand, in the suburbs south of Copenhagen. A photographer and member of Magnum Photos, he has published several monographs of his unique, expressive style of black-and-white photography and exhibited his work widely. After studying at the European Film College, in 1988 he was admitted to Fatamorgana, the Danish School of Documentary and Art Photography. He has started the international career after leaving Greenland, whereas a fisherman and a hunter – he lived with his girlfriend Sabine and her Greenlander family. The project from that period – “Sabine” – was published in 2004 and nominated for prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Prize a year after. Since then all of his artistic projects – “The Gomez Brito Family”, “I, Tokyo”, “Bangkok Encounter”, “Arrivals and Departures” – met with a wide interest of the public and critics alike, bringing further distinctions and awards, among them: Leica European Publishers Award (2009), Paul Huf Award (2008, shortlist), Fogtdals Foto Award (2007), World Press Photo (2005, Daily Life Stories, 1st prize).
