Leica has been releasing strictly limited, special editions since 1975. These exceptional models are conceived and produced by Leica in collaboration with artists, photographers, designers and premium brands. Thanks to this tradition, a number of unusual and unique special models and sets with perfectly coordinated accessories have been released.

Each of these strictly limited editions is meticulously hand-crafted in the Leica factory and offered in an equally fascinating, premium presentation set. Indeed, the unique experience of owning these outstanding products begins with the opening of the box, specially developed for each limited Leica camera set.

LEICA M MONOCHROM "DRIFTER"

“Photography is magic – it’s a time capsule. It’s something that keeps the moment alive,” rock legend Lenny Kravitz explains. The artist has previously collaborated with Leica in 2015, when he designed a special-edition version of the M-P (Typ 240): the M-P “Correspondent” paid homage to the weathered Leica camera Kravitz’s father brought back from his time as a press correspondent in the Vietnam War. The design of the new Leica M Monochrom “Drifter," by contrast, is very much a reflection of the artist’s present persona.

Founded in 1919, the American Society of Cinematographers is the world’s oldest association for filmmakers, and unites the best cinematographers of our times. Just like Leica, this extraordinary society based in Hollywood has influenced and shaped the way people of all cultures see the world for more than 100 years.

In February 2019, the ASC will be presenting its prestigious awards for the 33rd time – an ideal occasion during which to present an exclusive tool for filmmakers: the Leica M10-P “ASC 100 Edition”. 

In the early 1919, Oskar Barnack, an enthusiastic cinematographer with a love of photography, felt the need to relieve the burden of using the then cumbersome still cameras. He took the 35 mm strip motion picture film - then exclusively utilized by cinematographers -and used it for capturing individual exposures. Barnack doubled the frame size to a horizontal format of 24 × 36 mm. As he wrote in his notebook at the time, “Mikrokinoeinrichtung fertig für Aufnahmen” (micro cine apparatus ready for filming). This records the invention of “Ur-Leica”, which, in 1913/14, went on to lay the foundations for the development of 35 mm photography as we know it today.

That is one of the stories about how the “Ur-Leica” came to be. The second story goes like this: Oskar Barnack was looking for an instrument with which he could conduct exposure tests for motion picture films. Similar to the situation today, in the early years of the 20th century, it was far from easy to check the visual and technical aspects of a scene before shooting. Back then, cinematographers had to run lengths of costly 35 mm film through their unwieldy cine cameras and develop it in order to determine the correct exposure.

In contrast to this – thanks to his revolutionary “Ur-Leica” – Oskar Barnack needed only a single exposed frame of film to accomplish this result. He further refined his technique, and used a series of bracketed exposures to arrive at an approximation of the ideal exposure value required. While Barnack’s invention of the first 35 mm still camera rang in a new era of photography, the name Leica was to become an inseparable part of the art of creating moving pictures. Today, a further chapter has been added to the love story that began more than a century ago: the Leica M10-P “ASC 100 Edition continues Barnack’s ingenious idea and translates it into modern terms.

The Leica M10-P “ASC 100 Edition” will be the only camera on the market that can recreate the authentic look of the cinema in still pictures. For the first time, it will be possible to reliably and effortlessly assess the look, the subjective “feel”, and framing of a shot.

The set comprises a Leica M10-P camera and a Leica Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH. lens and - with its two specially tailored cinema-look mode - is an exclusive professional tool for aiding cinematographers and filmmakers in their search for the truly exceptional visual experience.The two Cine Looks have been developed by Leica imaging quality specialists in collaboration with some of the world’s most influential cinematographers and members of the ASC. While the ASC Cine Classic mode simulates analog 35 mm motion-picture film look, the ASC Contemporary mode delivers the current digital look of contemporary movies.

To make the M10-P “ASC 100 Edition” the perfect tool for professional cinematographers, it will enable users to select from different aspect ratios used in cinematography.Once activated, the corresponding aspect ratios are displayed as a bright-line frame.

The ”ASC 100 Edition” set also includes a Visoflex electronic accessory and a Leica M-PL-Mount. Together with the Cine Looks, and the selectable aspect ratios, this enables the use of the combination as a digital director's viewfinder. The Leica M-PL Mount enables the use of almost all PL mount cine lenses available on the market. The Leica M10-P “ASC 100 Edition” thus provides cinematographers and filmmakers with the ability to view and test scenes with any desired lens before shooting begins. Location scouting can also be made much easier with the aid of the Leica FOTOS App, as the combination of the camera and the App offers the ability to share and discuss results immediately with all parties involved in the filming project.

The modern interpretation of Oskar Barnack’s vision is expressed not only in the unique range of functions offered by Leica M10-P “ASC 100 Edition”, but also in the camera’s design.  Radically reduced to just the essentials, the engravings on its black chrome surfaces are also completely in black.  The technical-functional look is carried forward in the leathering, which is similar to that also found on the Leica SL. The design of the Leica Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH. of the set stands in contrast to the camera and reflects the character of the “Ur-Leica”. Its gold-colored anodized finish recalls the brass of the lens of the groundbreaking original and stylishly translates it into present-day gold. The final touch to the look of the Leica M10-P “ASC 100 Edition” is the classic ASC logo on the top plate that seems to disappear in certain lighting conditions.

The Leica M10-P ‘ASC 100 Edition’ will be available from autumn 2019.

Reminiscent of the vintage Summicron 50 f/2 (II) from 1956, the APO-Summicron-M 50 f/2 ASPH., black chrome features the characteristically scalloped focusing ring, with barrel components machined from brass.

This special lens has engravings for the focal length and distances measured in feet highlighted with red enamel paint, meticulously applied by hand.

The classic package is completed with a vintage-style , round brass lens hood engraved with ‘Made in Germany’ and a lens cap carved from solid brass.

The retro-style black chrome version of this lens matches the incredible capabilities and image rendering of the standard Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 f/2 ASPH., and will be limited to just 700 lenses worldwide.

LEICA SUMMARON-M 28 f/5.6,
matte black paint

The special series of the Leica Summaron-M 28 f/5.6 finished in matte black paint bolsters the range of classic lenses from Leica with a new and exclusive color option, making for a stealthier variant of such an iconic lens with vintage aesthetic signature.

The special paint used here is particularly resistant to wear and gives the lens an appearance almost identical to that of the classic black chrome finishes, while the aperture engravings seen from the front are filled out in bright and bold red paint.

The Summaron-M is modeled on a screw mount lens produced at the Leitz factory in Wetzlar from 1955 to 1963. With a length of less than 2 centimeters, this extremely compact wide-angle is the smallest lens of the M-System portfolio.

The performance and technical specifications of this lens match the serial production product. The edition is limited to 500 lenses worldwide.

Leica M10-P Edition “Safari”

The eye-catching special finish of olive green “Safari” cameras from Leica have a long and storied tradition, dating back to the early years of the M-System.

The first Leica cameras with this high-quality paint finish in olive green were originally designed and constructed for military use in the field. Their reputation as robust and reliable tools under extreme conditions spread rapidly around the world.

What began in 1957 with the Leica M3 “Olive” manufactured for the German armed forces went on to become a story of legends in the camera world. While the subsequent olive green M3 and M4 cameras were manufactured exclusively for military use, 1977 saw the appearance of the olive green Leica R3 “Safari” camera in response to increasing demand from private customers.

This special edition was followed by a series of popular successors: the M6 TTL “Safari” in 2000, the M8.2 “Safari” in 2008 and, in 2015, the M-P (Typ 240) “Safari”.

Today, the Leica M10-P Edition “Safari” camera and the matching Leica Summicron-M 50 f/2 Edition “Safari” premium lens finished in olive green paint carry that history forward and represent a perfect symbiosis of functionality and design. All visible metallic components of the camera are elaborately machined from solid brass. The premium olive green paint finish makes the camera and lens resistant to handling blemishes and scratches and provides enduring protection against external influences such as chemicals and UV light. This is first time in the history of Leica Camera that an M-Lens has been offered in this now legendary olive green finish.

The Leica Summicron-M 50 f/2 – one of Leica’s most quintessential 50 mm lenses – will sport the iconic olive green for a perfect match with the Leica M10-P Edition “Safari” and all its military-inspired forebears to become the Leica Summicron-M 50 f/2 Edition “Safari”.

Leica M Monochrom “Stealth Edition”

The Leica M Monochrom special “Stealth Edition” was designed by Marcus Wainwright, founder and owner of the acclaimed fashion label “rag & bone.”

Wainwright is also a dedicated Leica photographer who shoots with various Leica cameras, often in black and white using his M6.

In December 2016, the APO-Summicron-M 50 f/2 ASPH., the sharpest standard lens of all, became the first Leica lens to be offered in a red anodized version. Now, this lens is followed by a version of the Leica M (Typ 262) in exactly the same fascinating finish.

The edition – as in the case of the APO-Summicron-M 50 f/2 ASPH. – is strictly limited to 100 pieces worldwide. The top plate and the baseplate are machined from solid aluminum and anodized in red.

The International Leica Society – 50th Anniversary
Special Edition APO-Summicron-M 50 f/2 ASPH.

2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the International Leica Society (LHSA). To commemorate the occasion, Leica has produced a special anniversary edition of the APO-Summicron-M 50 f/2 ASPH. The lens has been designed to resemble the Summicron 50 f/2, which was introduced in 1954 together with the Leica M3. Though originally launched as a retractable lens, it was subsequently also available as a rigid version from 1956.
